Parking – the live rail of local politics

I’ve fought the temptation to write too much here about the issue of Parking – mainly because it is one of those issues that seems to polarise people.

I’m trying to cover issues with a bit of balance here, but I can’t find anyone to publicly take one side of the argument (the pro-changes brief).

So polarise is too strong a word. On the one hand, the support is largely silent.

But there appears to be a lot of people who are very vocal in their opposition to many of the changes that have happened recently – ranging from the hike in the charges through to the changes in the way that people have to pay for it (it appears that the only way to pay is by using a mobile phone).

The opposition to these changes has taken the form of a legal campaign.

The thing is, this issue can’t reasonably be ignored on these grounds. At the recent Business Forum meeting, it was really the only issue that anyone wanted to discuss.

The good news is that the next Business Forum meeting is at 6:15pm for 6:30pm on Thursday, 1st December 2011

The venue this time is Trinity Church, 15 Nether Street, North Finchley, N12 7NN (map link), as the Arts Depot was not available. After a bit of e-mail to-ing and fro-ing, the Council initially agreed to send someone called Neil Richardson who is in charge of operational parking.

In my view, with such a live issue, I suggested that (with all due respect to Mr Richardson) sending an ‘only doing my job’ officer wouldn’t cover what is plainly a matter of policy – something for the ruling group to address.

It now seems that the leader of the council, Cllr Cornelius will be at the meeting on Thursday.

Come along if you can?

Everyone who lives in the area has a stake in local businesses being a success. It’s not a closed meeting.
